Verdicts & Settlements
Below is a sampling of client cases
for whom Jeffrey Manheimer and Scott Charnas have obtained
settlements and verdicts during their many years of representing
seriously injured clients.
 | A 19 year-old laborer awarded $5.6 million for
injuries that resulted when a guardrail collapsed, sending him
plummeting 30 feet, and landing on his head. The young man
suffered serious head injuries, and has permanent brain damage.
|
 | $4.2 million recovery for a scaffolding
collapse. The owner of a small subcontracting company was
loading bags of shingles onto staging on which he was standing,
when he threw the last bag down onto the scaffold plank. The
entire staging suddenly collapsed, causing him to fall 20 feet to
the ground. He suffered serious brain damage, and was unable
to walk again.
|
 | $3 Million settlement for a 32 year old union bricklayer
who was injured when a floor slab that was being cut above him
collapsed onto him. No safety equipment or bracing was provided to
him at the site. He sustained multiple injuries and underwent
numerous surgeries and remains totally disabled.
|
 | $1.2 million recovery for injuries resulting
from defective design of automobile. An 18 year-old girl,
just graduated from high school, was a passenger in a convertible
that took a sharp curve too fast and rolled over. The car ended up
in an upside-down position, with the windshield completely
collapsed and the top of the passenger door compressing the girl’s
chest and cutting off oxygen to her brain. The car was lifted off
her by several bystanders, which saved her life but left her with
severe brain damage. The A-pillars that held the windshield
in place were too weak to withstand the forces of a foreseeable
rollover accident.
|
 | Death caused by defective garage lift-
$750,000
settlement for a young man in his 20’s. A lift
designed to support cars in an elevated position to allow them to
be serviced was found to be defective. The man was found pinned
against a worktable by a car that had apparently slipped off the
front of the elevated lift. He had been crushed to death.
|
 | $750,000
recovery for a 50 year old sheet-metal worker
who was injured when a defectively secured ladder fell over
causing him to fall 10 feet to the ground breaking his hip and
tearing cartilage in his knee.
|
 | $970,000 recovery for a 44 year old resident who
was driving on a highway near his home when a drunk
driver going in the opposite direction lost control, flipped over
the divider and landed on his vehicle. He sustained permanently
disabling back injuries and has never been able to return to work.
|
 | Recovery of $1,750,000 for a cement and
concrete laborer who was caused to fall off a 14 foot high wall
when re-bar that he was bending broke off in his hand. He was not
provided with any type of fall protection devices. He was rendered
totally disabled from employment after two back surgeries.
|
 | $900,000 settlement out of a One Million Dollar insurance policy
for an 8 year old boy who lost all five fingers of one hand in an
un-guarded meat grinder in a store where he was allowed to roam
freely in areas not open to the public. He will receive over $5
Million over the course of his life.
|
 | $650,000
settlement after liability was won, for a 40
year old union carpenter who was on a defective scaffold that
broke under him causing him to fall 10 feet to the ground. He
underwent knee surgery and a back fusion.
|
 | $400,000 recovery for the 95 year-old nursing
home resident beaten by nurse's aide. The elderly victim was
taken to the hospital, where brain surgery was performed.
|
 | $300,000 settlement for a marble worker who fell through an
un-guarded hole in the floor of a construction site to the floor
below sustaining a fracture of the wrist which needed surgery. He
is currently back at work and performing his duties.
|
 | $140,000 for a mentally and physically disabled adult who was
struck and injured while crossing a road near his home, against the traffic light. He sustained multiple fractures as
a result of the accident. |
